Values vs. Beliefs

If you're a designer or any other creative, you probably have often heard about values and beliefs. Both things shape who we are and how we see the world. But what's the difference between them, and why does it matter? Today, I will explain the distinction between values and beliefs and discuss why being open to changing our beliefs as we go through life is essential.

Values vs. Beliefs: What's the real difference?

Values are often hard-core and stable, like the big, almost unchanging rules that help us make decisions. They're the things we believe are really important.

Beliefs can change significantly over time. This is because beliefs are like the ideas and opinions we have about different things, and they're often influenced by what we learn and experience. Also, some of our self-beliefs can give us a limited self-image (especially the negative ones), preventing us from experimenting or expanding ourselves in different circumstances. Ex: “I’m not that talented”; “I can’t do it”; “It’s impossible to be happy”; etc.

Values tend not to change much in our lives, and they're the things that make us who we are, like honesty, kindness, and fairness - very grounded in our childhood education.💡 Do you know yours?

On the other hand, beliefs can change (we hope to) as we learn and grow. They're often based on what we've seen, heard, or learned from others.

The problem with beliefs that never change
What can happen if we never change our beliefs? Sticking to the same beliefs can lead to a narrow perspective. Problems with others can also arise: intolerance and conflicts often result from rigid beliefs and a lack of willingness to understand different perspectives. Being open to change and new ideas can lead to a more harmonious society and a more healthy relationship with oneself.

How does it reflect in our professional life?

Your values are the foundation of your personal brand, reflecting your core principles and what you stand for as a creative. Your beliefs can shape your unique perspective and influence the stories you tell through your work. Remaining open to new ideas can strengthen your personal brand, making it more relatable and reflective of your growth.

Finding a good balance
While values give us a strong foundation, we must be open to changing our beliefs as we learn and grow. According to Dr. Carol Dweck, a writer and psychologist, "The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects how you lead your life." Values help us make the right choices, but beliefs can and should change as we gain new knowledge and experiences.

As we navigate a world that's always moving, being willing to adapt our beliefs without giving up our values is a sign of wisdom and growth. Embracing change and being open to different ideas are essential parts of our journey of self-discovery.

"You must be the change you want to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi

As we evolve, our beliefs should also evolve to align with our ever-expanding understanding of the world. It's the key to elevating our potential and creating a more balanced and harmonious society.
